Schalke 04 vs RB Leipzig: no home league goal for Schalke, no away point for Leipzig Bundesliga

Schalke haven’t scored a Bundesliga goal at the Veltins-Arena this season. Their three home games finished 0-0 against Bayern Munich, 0-0 against Elversberg and 0-1 against Mainz on 17 October, and all four league goals the promoted side have managed came away from home.

RB Leipzig have lost all three Bundesliga away games, 3-1 at Werder Bremen, 2-0 at Bayer Leverkusen and 6-1 at Bayern on 17 October, scoring two goals and conceding 11.

At home Leipzig look like a different club: four wins from four, 18 goals scored and none conceded, which makes it nine straight home league wins. Martin Demichelis made eight changes against Elversberg on Saturday and still won 4-0, with all four goals coming after a goalless first half.

The game kicks off at 14:30 UK time on Saturday 31 October. It’s the first meeting between the clubs since Schalke went down in 2023, and Leipzig won the last five, including 6-1 in Gelsenkirchen in January of that year.

Leipzig were at Rot-Weiss Essen in the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday evening and Schalke travel to Dynamo Dresden on Wednesday, which leaves Miron Muslic’s side with a day less to recover.

Schalke are 16th on six points, Leipzig fifth on 12. Bookmakers make Leipzig 1.83 favourites, with Schalke at 4.10 and the draw at 3.75.

Schalke 04: seven conceded, four scored and a treatment room filling up Schalke 04

Muslic’s side defend well for a promoted team. They’ve conceded seven goals in seven league games, kept three clean sheets and held Bayern to 0-0 on 5 September in front of 62,094.

The attack is where the season has stalled. Three of their four league goals came in one afternoon, the 3-1 win at Union Berlin on 11 September, through Robin Gosens, Adil Aouchiche and Maximilian Wober. The fourth was a deflected effort in a 2-1 defeat at Freiburg, and no Schalke player has more than one league goal.

Saturday’s 0-0 at Koln followed the same pattern. Satoshi Tanaka hit the post late in the game, and Schalke lost Gosens and Soufiane El-Faouzi to a collision two minutes before half-time.

Wober is likely out for the rest of 2026 with a thigh injury, captain Kenan Karaman has a muscle problem, and Ron Schallenberg, Dejan Ljubicic and Moussa Sylla are also missing. El-Faouzi has a broken nose, Gosens took two cuts to the forehead and Aouchiche is carrying a knock.

Edin Dzeko, 40, needed treatment for a deep head cut against Mainz, and reports conflict on whether he’s fit to start. He has two goals in the cup this season and none in the league.

Muslic set up in a 5-3-2 at Koln, with summer signings Hwang Hee-chan, on loan from Wolves, and Junior Dina Ebimbe in attack. Karius kept goal behind a back three of Kurucay, Becker and Katic.

RB Leipzig: 18-0 at home, 2-11 away, and a coach under scrutiny RB Leipzig

Demichelis has rotated heavily this month. Against Elversberg he started Orjan Nyland in goal instead of Maarten Vandervoordt, and the goals came from Tidiam Gomis on 48 minutes, Romulo twice and Baumgartner six minutes from time.

Bayern scored six on 17 October, Luis Diaz with a hat-trick, and Real Madrid put four past Leipzig in the Champions League four days later. That’s ten goals conceded in two away matches.

Christopher Nkunku, on loan from AC Milan, scored a hat-trick in the 6-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on 10 October and has four league goals, but he’s out with a groin injury. Guiu (hamstring) and Assan Ouedraogo (shoulder) are also missing, Baumgartner is a doubt with a thigh problem and Maxime Esteve was carrying a knock on Tuesday.

Without Nkunku, Nusa has taken on the creative load, with three league goals and five assists in all competitions. He set up two goals against Elversberg.

Demichelis is under pressure in the local press despite the home results, and Manchester City visit in the Champions League on 4 November. With the Essen tie on Tuesday, another rotated side on Saturday looks likely.

All three away league defeats came against sides currently in the top six: Bremen (sixth), Leverkusen (fourth) and Bayern (first). Schalke, 16th, are the weakest away opponent Leipzig have faced in the league so far.

Probable lineup Schalke 04: Karius; Kurucay, Becker, Katic; Tanaka, Gosens, El-Faouzi, Aouchiche, Adamu; Hwang, Dina Ebimbe
Probable lineup RB Leipzig: Vandervoordt; Baku, Orban, Lukeba, Raum; Seiwald, Reitz; Nusa, Romulo, Maksimovic; Gomis

Our prediction: Under 2.5 goals (2.75)

Schalke’s three home league games have produced one goal in 270 minutes, and their seven league matches overall have produced 11, an average of 1.6 a game. Leipzig’s away attack has two goals in three matches.

The market prices over 2.5 goals at 1.44, so this pick goes against the consensus, and Leipzig’s 18 home goals explain why. But that scoring has come in Leipzig, and a rotated side facing a five-man defence that has conceded once at home all season is more likely to win 1-0 or 2-0 than run up a score.

A narrow Leipzig win and a goalless draw both land this bet. We prefer under 2.5 goals at 2.75 to Leipzig at 1.83, given their away results.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
