Bayer Leverkusen vs VfB Stuttgart: last season’s double for Stuttgart against a perfect home record
Stuttgart scored seven goals against Bayer Leverkusen last season and won both meetings, 4-1 at the BayArena on 10 January and 3-1 at home on 9 May. Those are two of only three wins Stuttgart have recorded in 31 meetings with Leverkusen in all competitions, against 20 for Leverkusen and eight draws.
The two sides meet again on Saturday 31 October, kick-off 14:30 UK time, from opposite ends of the table. Leverkusen are fourth on 13 points after seven matchdays. Stuttgart are 15th on six, in the relegation play-off place, with five league defeats already.
Both lost last weekend, and Leverkusen went down 3-0 at Hoffenheim on Sunday, a result that ended a six-game winning run in all competitions and an eight-game unbeaten run. They had 58% of the ball and managed one shot on target from nine attempts.
Stuttgart’s defeat was the more damaging of the two, a 3-2 loss at home to Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday 23 October, against a side that hadn’t taken a single point all season. Ermedin Demirovic scored twice, but Gladbach had already gone 3-1 up by the 66th minute.
The gap between Stuttgart’s European and domestic form runs through this fixture. Sebastian Hoeness’s side are unbeaten in the Champions League with seven points from three games, including a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on 20 October, yet they’ve lost three of their four Bundesliga away games.
Both clubs also play in the second round of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday, Leverkusen at home to Nuremberg and Stuttgart away at Paderborn. We’d expect both coaches to use that tie to rest players rather than weaken Saturday’s side.
Bayer Leverkusen: three home league wins from three, one goal conceded
Carles Martinez’s side have won every league game at the BayArena this season: 4-0 against Union Berlin, 2-0 against RB Leipzig and 2-1 against Freiburg on 18 October. That’s eight goals scored and one conceded in three home matches.
Martinez arrived from Girona in the summer, after Kasper Hjulmand was dismissed following a sixth-place finish. He became the first coach in Bundesliga history whose team scored at least twice in each of his first ten matches, a run that ended in Sinsheim on Sunday.
Patrik Schick has scored most of the goals. He found the net in each of the first six Bundesliga matchdays, a club record that beat the five-game runs of Berbatov and Kiessling, and he scored the winner against Freiburg. He added two more in the Europa League at Lech Poznan.
Martin Terrier (hamstring), Guela Doue (calf), Kennet Eichhorn, Eliesse Ben Seghir and Christian Kofane are ruled out, and Montrell Culbreath has a foot problem. Loic Bade took a blow to the head in a collision at Hoffenheim and Moussa Diaby came off with a thigh problem, so both are doubts for Saturday.
Two summer signings are in line to start in defence: Facundo Medina, who joined from Marseille, and Miguel Gutierrez, signed from Napoli. Quansah and Tapsoba complete the expected back four in front of Flekken.
Leverkusen have also won all three Europa League games without conceding, 2-0 against Celje, 4-0 at Lech Poznan and 2-0 at OFI Crete, where Jonas Hofmann scored twice. Marseille visit in that competition on 5 November.

VfB Stuttgart: seven points in Europe, three away defeats from four in the league
Stuttgart’s Bundesliga away results read 1-5 at Bayern, 1-2 at Hoffenheim, 2-0 at Paderborn and 0-1 at Hamburger SV. That’s four goals scored and eight conceded on the road, and the only win came against a promoted side.
In the Champions League they beat Viking 3-1, won 3-0 at Slovan Bratislava and then drew with Atletico, where Leweling scored on 36 minutes before Julian Alvarez equalised two minutes after the restart. Atletico finished with ten men after Hjulmand’s red card on 64 minutes.
Demirovic is their leading scorer, with three Bundesliga goals and a hat-trick against Viking. Deniz Undav, who scored in May’s 3-1 win over Leverkusen, has no goals or assists in six league appearances this season.
Hoeness is under pressure from parts of the support after the Gladbach defeat, and the schedule doesn’t help him. Stuttgart go to Paderborn in the cup on Wednesday, Leverkusen on Saturday and Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday 3 November.
Josha Vagnoman (hamstring), Dan-Axel Zagadou (hamstring), Nikolas Nartey (muscle), Tiago Tomas (muscle) and Justin Diehl (thigh) are all out. Maximilian Mittelstadt is listed as doubtful with a heel problem; he converted a penalty in May’s win over Leverkusen.
The 20-year-old Seimen has taken over in goal. He made his Bundesliga debut at Paderborn on 10 October and kept his place for the Champions League game against Atletico ten days later.
Probable lineup Bayer Leverkusen: Flekken; Quansah, Tapsoba, Medina, Gutierrez; Andrich, A. Garcia; Tillman, Maza, Tella; Schick
Probable lineup VfB Stuttgart: Seimen; Assignon, Jeltsch, Chabot, Mittelstadt; Stiller, Karazor; Leweling, El Khannouss, Fuhrich; Demirovic

Our prediction: Bayer Leverkusen to win (1.75)
Leverkusen have won all three home league games and conceded once in them. Stuttgart have lost three of their four away league games and arrive off a home defeat to the side that was bottom without a point, with a trip to Istanbul three days later.
Last season’s two Stuttgart wins are the argument against us, and the 4-1 at the BayArena in January was a heavy result. That came under Hjulmand, though, and this Stuttgart side has taken six points from seven league games.
We’d take Leverkusen at 1.75 despite their absentees. Schick’s form at home and Stuttgart’s away record point to a 2-1 home win.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
