Ligue 1: Mayulu and Godts sink Lyon as PSG go top

A wall that held for 71 minutes

Paris had the ball and Lyon had the plan. For most of Monday night at the Parc des Princes, the visitors sat in a low block, shut the central lanes and made PSG shoot from distance. Possession finished at 68% for the hosts, and for an hour it bought them very little.

Lyon were not just defending, either. Safonov had to stop a curler from Duranville on the half-hour and then beat away a fierce effort from Athekame from 25 yards. At the break it was 0-0, and Lyon goalkeeper Greif had barely been tested.

Luis Enrique changed that after the restart. Mika Godts replaced João Neves in the 56th minute, and Senny Mayulu came on for Ferran Torres in the 65th. Seven minutes later Mayulu cut the game open. He took the ball at the edge of the box and drove a hard shot past Greif at the near post.

Godts finishes it with his first Paris goal

The second arrived in the 84th minute and it was the better of the two. Quentin Ndjantou, on for Akliouche, slipped a ball in behind. Godts shifted onto his right foot and bent it into the net for his first goal in a PSG shirt. Greif had no chance.

Paris finished with 10 shots on target to Lyon’s five. They also ended the night with a small scare, as Vitinha took a knock to the ankle from Merah, stayed down, then came back on. Lyon lost Morton to an injury in stoppage time, with Remi Himbert replacing him.

What it does to the table

Both clubs started the evening on 14 points, and either could have gone top with a win. PSG took it and now sit alone on 17, one clear of Rennes on 16. The fixture was moved from Sunday after the Paris police prefecture restricted events around the weekend’s demonstrations, which left it sharing a date with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London. The Parc used the occasion to back Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, chanting his name early on after his cruciate ligament injury.
