NHL: Postava stonewalls Oilers in a first start for the ages

A goalie nobody had seen starts big

Michal Postava had never started an NHL game. The 24-year-old picked Edmonton for his first, and by the end he had stopped 25 shots through 65 minutes and all three Oilers attempts in the shootout. Detroit won 4-3.

The list of shooters he turned away reads like a highlight reel: Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Lucas Raymond scored the only shootout goal, a wrist shot under the bar in the first round.

Larkin forces overtime

The Red Wings chased the game all night. Vasily Podkolzin opened the scoring in the seventh minute for his eighth goal of the season, and Viktor Arvidsson tied it on the power play in the second period. Early in the third, Isaac Howard put Edmonton back in front, again on the power play, and Emmitt Finnie answered 30 seconds later off an Arvidsson pass.

Colton Dach, with his first goal of the year, deflected a Ryan Shea shot to make it 3-2 with 3:28 left. Detroit pulled Postava for an extra attacker, and Dylan Larkin scored from the slot with 1:17 remaining to send it to overtime.

Edmonton still takes the division lead

Arvidsson finished with a goal and an assist, Raymond with two assists. Detroit ended a four-game road trip at 2-1-1. The Oilers had lost 7-2 to Toronto on Saturday, but the point they earned is enough to move one ahead of Vegas atop the Pacific Division. Tristan Jarry stopped 26 shots for Edmonton.
