F1: Antonelli cruises in Austin, but the crown must wait

A dominant win with no title attached

Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, finishing in 1:35:16.650 for Mercedes. Charles Leclerc took second for Ferrari, 13.078 seconds back, and Max Verstappen completed the podium in third, 17.485 seconds behind the winner. Lewis Hamilton was fourth, a second further back.

It was a ninth win of the season for the Mercedes driver. He had arrived in Texas able to wrap up the championship, but the maths needed more than a victory.

The numbers behind the wait

Antonelli now leads his teammate George Russell by 123 points and Hamilton by 124. A maximum of 125 points is still available, so mathematically the fight is not over. A top-nine finish at the Mexico City Grand Prix, which runs from October 30 to November 1, would settle it with four rounds to spare.

“We are very close,” Antonelli said afterwards, adding that he hopes to clinch it very soon. Leclerc called his own afternoon “a positive race”.

Lower down the order

Russell came home eighth after a five-second penalty for running off track while fighting Oscar Piastri on lap one. Liam Lawson was ninth for Racing Bulls and Pierre Gasly took the final point in tenth for Alpine.
