A joint statement, two weeks after the clearance
The NFL and the players’ union said on Sunday they are working together to review how Jalen Hurts’ blood-clot case was handled. The announcement came in a joint statement, after the NFLPA had pushed for an investigation.
Hurts is on injured reserve and is expected to miss the rest of the season. A superficial clot in his left calf developed into deep vein thrombosis, which then caused clots in both lungs. He cannot take part in football activities until he is off blood thinners.

The timeline behind the dispute
The Eagles said Hurts was hurt by a cleat in a game against the Rams on Oct. 4. He reported the injury to the medical staff on Oct. 8, practiced the next day, and was cleared to play against the Jaguars in London on Oct. 11, even though the clot had already been found.
Commissioner Roger Goodell and chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills defended that decision and said protocols were followed. The review now puts that claim in front of both the league and the union.
What Philadelphia loses
Hurts was 2-3 as a starter this season, with 933 passing yards, eight touchdowns, three interceptions and a 57.8% completion rate across five starts. The Eagles will have to find a quarterback plan without him.
