Freiburg vs Wolfsburg: 21 goals in Wolfsburg’s last five league games, and a Freiburg side leaking on the road

Wolfsburg’s last five league games have produced 21 goals. They drew 1-1 at Bochum, beat Heidenheim 3-1, drew 4-4 at Nurnberg, beat Darmstadt 5-1 and lost 1-0 at St. Pauli, and they’ve scored in four of the five.

That’s the side Freiburg host in the second round of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday 28 October, kick-off 17:00 UK time at the Europa-Park Stadion. A draw after 90 minutes means extra time and, if needed, penalties.

Freiburg went into the weekend third in the Bundesliga on 13 points from six games, with 15 goals scored and six conceded. Their week has been harder: a 2-1 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen on 18 October and a 3-0 loss at Monaco in the Conference League four days later.

The recent meetings have been close and open. Freiburg won 4-3 at Wolfsburg in December 2025, and the return in May finished 1-1 in Freiburg. Both teams scored in four of the last six league meetings.

The bookmakers have Freiburg at 1.44, the draw at 4.20 and Wolfsburg at 6.00. Both teams to score is 1.54.

A home win at 1.44 doesn’t leave much room after the last week. I’d rather back the pattern that both teams’ recent games have followed.

Freiburg: third in the Bundesliga, but five goals conceded in their last two games Freiburg

Freiburg’s league goals have come in bursts. They beat Werder Bremen 4-1, won 5-0 against Borussia Monchengladbach and drew 2-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt on 19 September.

The six goals conceded in their first six league games is the third-best record in the division, behind Dortmund and Bayern Munich. The last two away trips have undone some of that, with three conceded in Monaco and two at Leverkusen.

Their wins in the same spell have been narrow. They beat Schalke 2-1 and Jablonec 3-2, and the opposition scored in both games.

Igor Matanovic scored twice and set up another in the first round of the cup. Florent Muslija is out until late December with a cruciate ligament injury, and Yannik Engelhardt is a doubt with a hip problem.

This tie also comes three days after Sunday’s league game against Bayern Munich, Freiburg’s fourth match in 11 days. The squad that played in Monaco on Thursday and against Bayern on Sunday will need changes for Wednesday.

Wolfsburg: scoring in four of their last five, with a midfield short of bodies Wolfsburg

The 4-4 at Nurnberg sums up Wolfsburg’s autumn. They followed it with a 3-1 win over Heidenheim and then a 1-1 at Bochum, scoring eight goals across the three games.

The only blank in that run was the 1-0 defeat at St. Pauli, and they answered it by beating Darmstadt 5-1.

Away from home the picture is mixed. The three trips in that run brought a 4-4 at Nurnberg, a 1-1 at Bochum and the defeat at St. Pauli, so no away win, but five Wolfsburg goals in those three games.

Maximilian Arnold scored twice in the first round of the cup, and he remains the player who sets the tempo in midfield. He’ll need help, because the injury list is long.

Rogerio, Mattias Svanberg, Aster Vranckx and Fraser Hornby are all expected back only in mid-November, and Christian Eriksen is unavailable. That’s five senior players missing for the trip south.

Wolfsburg have kept the head-to-head record level over the years, with 14 wins to Freiburg’s 13 and five draws. Their last win in the fixture was a 2-1 in Freiburg in April 2024.

Free Football Prediction: Freiburg vs Wolfsburg

Our prediction: Both teams to score @ 1.54

Wolfsburg have scored in four of their last five league games and put five past Darmstadt and four past Nurnberg in that run. Freiburg have conceded five in their last two matches, and both of their recent wins, over Schalke and Jablonec, came with the opposition scoring.

The risk is Wolfsburg’s injury list, with Svanberg, Vranckx, Hornby, Rogerio and Eriksen all missing, and the 1-0 at St. Pauli shows they can be shut out. Freiburg’s attack, with 15 league goals in six, should still give them their goal.

Both teams scored in four of the last six meetings, including the 4-3 and the 1-1 last season. I’d take both teams to score at 1.54 ahead of the home win at 1.44. Over 2.5 goals at around 1.45 follows the same logic, but it needs three goals where this pick only needs one at each end.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
