Premier League: Spurs stun Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

A first win at Stamford Bridge since 2018

Tottenham went to Stamford Bridge on Saturday and left with a 2-0 win over Chelsea, and few saw it coming. Roberto De Zerbi’s side had won there only once in the Premier League before this, in April 2018. They had collected their first league victory of the season just five days earlier, a 3-1 home win over Coventry.

The run follows a training camp in Marbella that De Zerbi organised while under pressure. Two wins in a week have lifted Spurs out of the bottom three and, for now, up to 12th place.

They did not wobble when James Maddison limped off in the 51st minute, only weeks after returning from a long injury lay-off. The shape held.

Kinsky keeps the door shut, Penders opens it

Chelsea had the better of the opening hour, and Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was the reason it stayed goalless. He denied Cole Palmer in the 14th minute, then Jordan Henderson in the 36th. A minute later he blocked Morgan Rogers, and in the 62nd he got in the way of Pedro Neto.

At the other end, 21-year-old Mike Penders was starting because Emiliano Martinez is out with a fractured jaw. He came for a corner in the 77th minute, missed his punch and turned the ball into his own net.

Palmer sent off, Tel finishes it

Chelsea then made it harder on themselves. Palmer picked up a second yellow card in the 80th minute for wiping his studs down Conor Gallagher’s foot, eight minutes after a first booking for a petulant challenge on Mateus Fernandes. With ten men, the hosts were stretched when Mathys Tel found space in the 87th minute and ran 50 metres before finishing alone for 2-0.

Tottenham host Crystal Palace next Saturday. Chelsea will have to plan without Palmer for their next league game.
