Fortuna Sittard vs Excelsior: Descotte’s goals against a defence that has conceded two or more in five straight
Anthony Descotte has five league goals in nine games for Fortuna Sittard, and two of them came in his last outing, the 2-2 draw at NEC. On Sunday he faces an Excelsior back line that has conceded at least twice in each of its last five Eredivisie matches.
Kick-off at the Fortuna Sittard Stadion is 11:15 UK time on Sunday 25 October, in round 10 of the Eredivisie, with Ingmar Oostrom refereeing. Fortuna sit sixth on 15 points, their best return after nine games since they came back up to the top flight for 2018-19. Excelsior are 10th with 11.
Neither side has won since the international break. Fortuna led 1-0 and then 2-1 at NEC and still drew, because Willum Thor Willumsson equalised in the 93rd minute. Excelsior lost 5-1 at home to Groningen and then 4-0 at Heerenveen.
The head-to-head in Limburg leans one way. Fortuna have won their last four home league meetings with Excelsior: 4-1 in February 2019, 1-0 in September 2022, 5-2 in March 2024 and 2-1 in February 2026. Excelsior haven’t won in Sittard in nine visits going back to 2006, although they did win the last meeting, 1-0 in Rotterdam in October 2025.
Both clubs are back on Wednesday in the KNVB Beker, Fortuna away at Sparta Rotterdam and Excelsior at MVV Maastricht, so a few changes are possible. Both managers have kept faith with settled sides, though: Fortuna have named the same XI for two league games running, Excelsior for three.
Fortuna Sittard: unbeaten on the road, four points from four at home
Danny Buijs has an odd split to manage. Away from home, Fortuna are unbeaten in five league games: 2-2 at PSV, 3-2 at Groningen, 3-2 at ADO Den Haag, 1-0 at Willem II and 2-2 at NEC.
The home record is poor by comparison. A 3-1 win over Cambuur in August is their only league win in Sittard this season, and it was followed by a 2-0 defeat to AZ, a 5-1 beating by Ajax and a 1-1 draw with Twente.
Goals haven’t been the problem. Fortuna have scored 16 in the league, a quarter of them inside the opening 15 minutes, and they’ve failed to score only once, in that AZ defeat. Descotte leads the way with five, and Zeefuik is expected to partner him up front again.
The back line is less reliable. They’ve conceded 17 in nine, and at NEC they were 2-1 up going into stoppage time before Willumsson’s 93rd-minute equaliser cost them two points.
Ramazan Bayram and Ivan Marquez still haven’t played a minute this season. Yassin Oukili is set to miss a third straight game with a groin injury, while Jasper Dahlhaus could return after a problem picked up during the international break.
The home form is a worry, but this attack should find chances against this particular defence. Fortuna have scored at least twice in five of their nine league games.

Excelsior: ten points from their first five games, two from the next five
Ruben den Uil’s side made a flying start. A 4-0 win at Cambuur, a 2-1 home win over Sparta, a 3-0 win at Willem II and a 2-2 draw at NEC gave them 10 points from their first five games, with only PSV beating them.
Since then they’ve taken two points from five. A 2-1 home defeat to Utrecht and a 2-2 draw at Ajax came before the international break, then the 5-1 home loss to Groningen and the 4-0 defeat at Heerenveen. Only Willem II have collected fewer points over that stretch.
Excelsior kept two clean sheets in their first four league games and conceded three goals in that spell, two of them against PSV. Since then they’ve let in at least two in five matches running, 15 goals in total.
They’re better on the road. Eleven away goals is joint fourth in the division, and two of their three league wins have come away from Woudestein. Sliti, Garden and Silva are expected to start in the front three, with Yegoian and Meissen behind them.
Agust Thorsteinsson hasn’t scored in seven appearances and could drop to the bench. Noah Naujoks came back with a 13-minute cameo at Heerenveen, and the rest of the squad is fit.
Excelsior have lost three league games in a row only once since September 2025. Sunday is the first of four straight league fixtures against sides currently in the top half of the table.
Probable lineup Fortuna Sittard: Branderhorst; Pinto, Van Ottele, Guth, Brittijn, Hubner; Simons, Michut, ‘t Zand; Descotte, Zeefuik
Probable lineup Excelsior: Van Gassel; Janssen, Plug, Widell, Moreira; Hartjes, Meissen, Yegoian; Sliti, Garden, Silva

Our prediction: Fortuna Sittard to win (2.30)
Fortuna’s home form is the obvious concern, and 3.40 on the draw isn’t a silly price after their last two results. But Excelsior arrive having conceded 15 goals in five games, and Fortuna have scored in eight of their nine league matches.
The history in Sittard points the same way: four straight home wins over Excelsior and no home defeat to them in nine meetings since 2006. Descotte scored twice last weekend, and Excelsior haven’t kept a clean sheet since their fourth game of the season.
I’d back Fortuna Sittard to win at 2.30. Excelsior’s 11 away goals mean the hosts probably won’t keep a clean sheet, and a 2-1 home win is the score I’d expect.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
