NHL: Colorado runs Tampa Bay out of Denver behind MacKinnon

Colorado jumps out fast

Colorado needed one night to shake off a two-game losing streak. The Avalanche beat Tampa Bay 6-3 in Denver on Friday, and the Lightning’s three-game winning run ended in the process.

Devon Toews scored 1:08 into the game. Nazem Kadri doubled the lead on the power play at 5:56. Fedor Svechkov made it 3-0 only 24 seconds into the second period, and by then the Lightning were chasing. Nathan MacKinnon finished with a goal and three assists, including the goal at 4:18 of the third that restored a three-goal cushion at 5-2.

Tampa Bay never quite gets back in

Jake Guentzel kept the Lightning alive with two goals, one off a rebound at 8:13 of the second and one on the power play at 19:17. That second one came after Colorado lost a challenge over a missed stoppage, a gamble that handed Tampa Bay a man advantage it was happy to use. Artturi Lehkonen had already pushed the Avalanche lead to 4-1 at 13:57.

Charle-Edouard D’Astous made it 5-3 with 4:47 left. When Tampa pulled Andrei Vasilevskiy for an extra attacker with 2:57 to play, Martin Necas hit the empty net 14 seconds later to close the scoring. Necas ended up with a goal and two assists, and Lehkonen and Toews each had a goal and an assist.

Mackenzie Blackwood made 31 saves for Colorado. Vasilevskiy stopped 18. Logan O’Connor played his first game of the season, taking three shots in nearly 15 minutes.
