AZ Alkmaar vs FC Twente: Weghorst and Pjaca against a home side unbeaten in five meetings at the AFAS Eredivisie

Wout Weghorst and Marko Pjaca have six league goals each for FC Twente. Between them they’ve scored 12 of the side’s 17 in the Eredivisie, and both are in John van den Brom’s probable eleven for Sunday evening in Alkmaar.

Kick-off at the AFAS Stadion is 19:00 UK time on Sunday 25 October, with Alex Bos refereeing. AZ are second on 20 points, three behind Feyenoord. Twente are fifth on 17.

The two records look alike. AZ have won six, drawn two and lost one, scoring 20 and conceding 10. Twente have won five, drawn two and lost two, with 17 for and 10 against.

Both sides were in Europe on Thursday and both won comfortably. AZ beat Ararat-Armenia 4-0 away in the Europa League, and Twente won 4-1 at Lincoln Red Imps in the Conference League. AZ have now played four matches in 11 days.

The fixture has gone AZ’s way at home. They beat Twente 1-0 in December 2024, 3-2 in May 2025 and 2-1 in the KNVB Cup in February, then drew 2-2 in May. AZ also beat them 2-1 at home in May 2024, so Twente haven’t won in their last five visits, and AZ lead the all-time record 18 wins to 11 across 34 games.

The prices sit between 2.06 and 2.15 for an AZ win, 3.60 to 3.75 for the draw and around 2.80 for Twente. I’d make the home side a little shorter than that.

AZ Alkmaar: 11 goals in their last five home games and one league defeat all season AZ Alkmaar

Leeroy Echteld’s side have won four and drawn one of their last five home matches, scoring 11 and conceding four. The draw was 1-1 with Willem II on 11 September, and the wins include 5-2 against Go Ahead Eagles and 1-0 against Telstar.

Their only league defeat came at Feyenoord on 10 October, 2-0. They followed it with a 2-1 Europa League win over Hapoel Be’er Sheva, where Koopmeiners and Mexx Meerdink (from the spot) scored, and then a 2-2 draw at Cambuur last weekend.

That Cambuur draw is the one result I’d mark against them. It came three days after a European game, and Sunday is also three days after one.

Stije Resink has been out with a knee injury since March. Kees Smit and Jizz Hornkamp are also missing, and Jordy Clasie is a doubt with a knock, which could leave Koopmeiners to run midfield with Oufkir.

Meerdink leads the line. He’s priced at 2.20 to score anytime, ahead of Weghorst at 2.50, with Daal and Stengs expected in the front three around him.

I’d expect Echteld to keep his front three together. Dijkstra, Goes, Schouten and Chavez are the likely back four in front of De Busser, behind a midfield of Clasie, Koopmeiners and Oufkir if Clasie is fit.

FC Twente: one away win in five, and a home defeat to Utrecht last weekend FC Twente

Twente’s away form is the weak spot. Across their last five away games they’ve won once, drawn three times and lost once, scoring nine and conceding seven, and the draws include 1-1 at Fortuna Sittard and 2-2 at Groningen.

They lost 2-1 at home to Utrecht on 18 October. Three days earlier they’d beaten FC Thun 1-0 in the Conference League with a Ramiz Zerrouki goal, a narrow result given they had 22 shots to six and played the last half-hour against ten men.

The best result of their season came at home. They beat PSV 3-2 on 20 September, and they’ve also won 2-0 against ADO Den Haag and 1-0 against Telstar at home.

Van den Brom has absentees too. Lars Unnerstall, Max Bruns and Stav Lemkin, who has a muscle injury, are out, as is Thorvaldsen. Their status was still to be confirmed after the trip to Gibraltar.

Weghorst is priced at 2.50 to score, with Pjaca, Taha and D. Rots behind him. Twente’s likely midfield of Zerrouki and Weidmann will need to protect a back four of Van Rooij, Propper, Nijstad and Adelgaard against AZ’s front three.

Van den Brom has also kept his side more settled. Twente have retained 82% of their starting eleven across the last six games, against 56% for AZ. AZ played four matches in 11 days before Sunday, and Echteld has shuffled his side through that stretch.

Twente beat AZ 1-0 at home in November 2025. They haven’t won in any of their last five visits to Alkmaar.

Probable lineup AZ Alkmaar: De Busser; Dijkstra, Goes, Schouten, Chavez; Clasie, Koopmeiners, Oufkir; Stengs, Daal, Meerdink
Probable lineup FC Twente: Drommel; Van Rooij, Propper, Nijstad, Adelgaard; Zerrouki, Weidmann; D. Rots, Taha, Pjaca; Weghorst

Our prediction: AZ Alkmaar to win @ 2.15

AZ to win at 2.15 is my pick. They’ve won four of their last five at home with 11 goals scored, they’re unbeaten in their last five home meetings with Twente, and Twente have won one of their last five away games.

Weghorst and Pjaca are the reason this isn’t shorter. Twelve league goals between them is a real threat, and AZ conceded twice at Cambuur in the last game played on three days’ rest.

Twente’s own run doesn’t convince me. They lost at home to Utrecht last week and needed 22 shots to beat ten-man Thun by a single goal. I’d take AZ at the AFAS Stadion over a side that has drawn three of its last five away games.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
