Valencia vs Villarreal: 19th place, six goals scored and still no win for Aguirre
Valencia are 19th with one league win from nine games, and it came at Alavés on 15 September. They’ve scored six league goals all season, and only Getafe, with five, have managed fewer.
Carlos Corberán was sacked on 13 September with the club bottom on one point from five games. Javier Aguirre took over at the end of the month and has drawn both his matches, 2-2 at Racing Santander and 0-0 at home to Athletic Bilbao on 17 October.
Villarreal are seven places higher on nine points, three clear of Valencia, and they arrive at Mestalla on Saturday after a 4-3 defeat at Liverpool. They led 2-0 at Anfield inside half an hour through Georges Mikautadze and Cardona, then conceded four times.
The derby record has swung Villarreal’s way. Valencia haven’t beaten Villarreal in five meetings, losing 2-1 away in February and 2-0 at home in October 2025. Their last win came on 2 January 2024, a 3-1 at Mestalla.
Kick-off is 17:30 UK time. Villarreal travel to Manacor in the Copa del Rey three days later, so Iñigo Pérez has room to pick his strongest side here.
I don’t see where Valencia’s goals come from. They’ve failed to score in five of their nine league games, three of them at Mestalla.
Valencia: five scorers on one goal each and Hugo Duro still waiting
Valencia’s six league goals have been spread thin. Otorbi, Rioja, Sadiq, Raba and Mayol have one each, and Hugo Duro, the usual centre-forward, hasn’t scored in the league this season.
At home it’s been grim. They lost 5-0 to Barcelona, 1-0 to Betis and 3-2 to Real Sociedad at Mestalla, and the 0-0 with Athletic on 17 October was the first time Aguirre’s side kept a clean sheet.
Aguirre’s arrival has steadied the defence a little. The 2-2 at Racing came with goals from Raba in the second minute and Otorbi in the 65th, and Valencia have lost neither of his two games.
The absences hurt both ends. André Almeida is suspended after a red card. Diego López (knee), Sadiq (muscle), Foulquier, Sergi Canós (knee) and Copete (knee) are all out, and Rioja is a doubt with a heel problem.
That leaves Aguirre with Raba, Javi Guerra and Arnaut Danjuma behind Duro. Duro is still looking for his first league goal of the season, and Sadiq, one of the five scorers, is injured.

Villarreal: three goals at Anfield, frustration against Elche
Villarreal have had a strange October. They lost 1-0 at Real Madrid on the 10th, beat Napoli 3-1 in the Champions League three days later, drew 0-0 at home to Elche and then scored three at Anfield and still lost.
Pérez made nine changes for the Elche game and said afterwards he was frustrated by the lack of goals. The Napoli win, with Mikautadze, Mouriño and Oluwaseyi scoring, ended a run of seven straight Champions League defeats for the club.
Pape Gueye is their top league scorer with three. Álex Moleiro, Mikautadze and Gerard Moreno have two each, and so does Nicolas Pépé, who is out with an eye injury. Tajon Buchanan is also missing with a muscle problem.
Away from home Villarreal have averaged 1.8 goals scored and 1.4 conceded in their recent league games. They won 3-1 at Malaga earlier this season and beat Levante 3-1 at home on 20 September.
The defence is the worry. Four conceded at Liverpool, three at Dortmund and three at home to Deportivo is a lot for a side with Champions League ambitions.
Probable lineup Valencia: Dimitrievski; Becerra, Tárrega, de Haas, Gayà; Guido Rodríguez, Pepelu; Raba, Guerra, Danjuma; Duro
Probable lineup Villarreal: Not announced at time of publication (expected core: Junior; Mouriño, Navarro, Veiga, Romero; Comesaña, Gueye, Moleiro; Moreno, Mikautadze)
Free La Liga Prediction: Valencia vs Villarreal
Our prediction: Villarreal to win @ 2.15
Valencia have six league goals in nine games and their top scorers have one each. Villarreal have Gueye, Mikautadze, Moreno and Moleiro, and they scored three goals at Anfield on Tuesday night.
The argument against is that Aguirre hasn’t lost yet, and Villarreal’s defence conceded four at Anfield and three at both Dortmund and at home to Deportivo. That’s why the price is 2.15 rather than something shorter. Valencia, though, have won one in nine and haven’t beaten Villarreal since January 2024.
I’d back Villarreal at 2.15. With the Copa trip to Manacor next week, Pérez can play his first-choice front four here.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
