A draft pick in a Jayhawks jersey
Minnesota took Trey Kaufman-Renn 59th overall in June. He never signed a contract. Now he is on the Kansas roster, practicing with the Jayhawks and waiting on a ruling about a sixth year of college eligibility. A temporary injunction lets him take part while that request is pending.
He fills the roster spot of Grant Mordini, a freshman guard who suffered a season-ending patellar tendon injury in September. Kaufman-Renn has enrolled in classes and has been on the practice floor since last week.

What Kansas gets
The 6-foot-9 forward is 24. Last season at Purdue he averaged 14.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 37 starts. Across four seasons with the Boilermakers he played 147 games, 112 of them starts, and averaged 11.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists after redshirting his first year on campus. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2024-25 and reached a national championship game, an Elite Eight and a Sweet 16.
Bill Self expects the learning curve to be short. He called Kaufman-Renn “extremely well-drilled and well-coached” and said his basketball IQ should make the transition quicker than most.
The catch
Second-round picks do not get guaranteed NBA contracts, which explains why a player in his position can still go back to school. Whether the NCAA grants the extra year is the open question. Kansas opens its regular season at home against Fordham on Nov. 2.
