Bournemouth vs Sunderland: winning in Europe, struggling at home Premier League

Bournemouth and Sunderland have both won their opening two Europa League games. They’ve also combined for one Premier League win between them since the end of August. Sunday at the Vitality Stadium (14:00 UK time) has that written all over it.

The Cherries are 18th, without a league win in six attempts under Marco Rose. Three draws, three defeats. Sunderland sit one point and one place above them in 17th, and they’ve lost each of their last three league games.

Thursday nights have been kinder to both.

Bournemouth beat Sturm Graz 3-0 to become the first English side in 21 years to win their opening two matches in European competition !

Sunderland needed a 93rd-minute Noah Sadiki winner to beat Torreense 2-1 in Portugal, their first away win of the season.

The trouble is that Europe doesn’t fix a league table.

Both of these clubs are getting used to the Thursday-Sunday rhythm for the first time, and both have looked stretched on the weekend. Fatigue is part of the story here.

The head-to-head offers little separation. 6 Premier League meetings, two wins each and two draws, with Bournemouth edging the goals 8-7. Sunderland took four points from the two meetings last season.

Who blinks first? Both defences have been generous all season. That shapes this one more than the result does.

Bournemouth: no clean sheet in eight league games under pressure Bournemouth

Last Saturday’s 5-1 defeat at Chelsea was ugly. It followed a narrow 1-0 home loss to Liverpool, and it left Bournemouth in the relegation zone heading into this one. A third straight league defeat would be the first since May 2024.

The defensive numbers are the real concern. Bournemouth haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last eight Premier League games. Draws at Newcastle (2-2) and at home to Brentford (2-2) and Everton (1-1) all came with goals conceded.

At the other end, they do score. Evanilson, Rayan and Alvaro Rodriguez all found the net against Sturm Graz on Thursday, and the Cherries have scored in every one of their six Premier League meetings with Sunderland.

Rose has a few options coming back. Amine Adli and Justin Kluivert returned from injury with appearances off the bench on Thursday, and Ben Gannon-Doak is pushing for his first league start of the season. James Hill, Adrien Truffert and Ryan Christie could all come back into the starting side.

The absences still bite. Alex Scott is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a thigh injury but won’t make Sunday, and Veljko Milosavljevic, Julian Araujo and Eli Junior Kroupi are also sidelined.

There’s no sugarcoating it: Rose needs a league win. The European results have bought him time, not credit.

Sunderland: two or more conceded in each of their last three league defeats Sunderland

Regis Le Bris has a defensive problem he hasn’t solved. Sunderland lost 2-0 at home to Arsenal, 5-3 at Manchester City and 2-0 at home to a Brighton side that finished with ten men. Two goals or more conceded every time.

Their last league win came against Fulham at the end of August, a 1-0 at the Stadium of Light. Since then, the only joy has come in cup and European competition.

The injury list makes the defensive job harder. Daniel Ballard is out with a hamstring injury, and Thomas Meunier misses a second straight game after being forced off against Brighton. That’s two first-choice defenders gone.

Up front, Wilson Isidor sat out the trip to Portugal and remains a doubt with a minor injury. Brian Brobbey is back in contention after making the bench on Thursday and could start. Romaine Mundle is still out with a knee injury.

The 5-3 at City is worth a second look. Conceding five is bad, but scoring three at the Etihad tells you this side can create. Jules Ahoko’s equaliser in Portugal showed the same willingness to push forward when chasing a game.

Avoid defeat here and Sunderland would go three straight league meetings unbeaten against Bournemouth for the first time in this fixture’s Premier League history. That’s a small target, but at this stage they’ll take anything.

Probable lineup Bournemouth: Petrovic; Smith, Hill, Silva, Truffert; Adams, Christie; Gannon-Doak, Rayan, Tavernier; Evanilson
Probable lineup Sunderland: Roefs; Mukiele, Danso, Alderete, Reinildo; Xhaka, Sadiki; Hume, Le Fee, Angulo; Brobbey

Our prediction: Both teams to score

Bournemouth haven’t kept a clean sheet in eight league games, and Sunderland have conceded at least twice in each of their last three. Neither goalkeeper looks like keeping a clean sheet at the moment.

Both attacks have shown signs of life too. Bournemouth have scored in every Premier League meeting with Sunderland, and the visitors found three goals at the Etihad and two in Portugal on Thursday. With Ballard and Meunier missing for Sunderland, the Cherries should create chances.

The result itself is hard to call between two tired sides at the wrong end of the table. Goals at both ends are the easier call here. That’s what we’re going with.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
