Football on the pitch ahead of Coventry v Newcastle in the Premier League

Football: Coventry hit four past Newcastle at home

A penalty after six minutes sets the tone

Newcastle were behind almost before they had settled. Goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down Sidiki Cherif inside the box and Jack Rudoni stepped up to convert the penalty in the sixth minute. It was the kind of start that shapes a whole night at the CBS Arena.

Cherif then took matters into his own hands three minutes after the restart, making it 2-0 in the 48th minute. Sven Botman pulled one back for Newcastle in the 70th, which briefly gave the visitors something to chase.

It did not last. Ellis Simms restored the two-goal cushion in the 81st minute with a deflected strike, and Stephen Mfuni added a fourth five minutes later to finish it.

What it means for both clubs

This was Coventry’s first home win of the season, and it came on the back of another victory, which lifts them out of the Premier League relegation zone. Frank Lampard was pleased with the shape of the performance. “We played like the team we want to be here,” he said.

Newcastle’s problem is a repeat one. It is their second 4-1 defeat on the road in a row, and Matthias Jaissle did not hide from it. “We can only apologise to the fans who came here; they deserve a different result,” he said. Jamie Carragher, working the game for Sky Sports, said Newcastle had been beaten up twice in their last two away games and that it has to stop very quickly.

The calendar offers both sides an early test. Newcastle host Aston Villa on Saturday, while Coventry travel to Tottenham next Monday.
