Benfica vs Vitoria Guimaraes: the league’s best attack against one of its bluntest Primeira Liga

Fifty-five league games unbeaten. Then Porto. Benfica’s 3-1 defeat at the Dragao before the international break ended a run that had stretched back well over a season, and it left Marco Silva’s side five points behind the leaders.

So Sunday matters. Vitoria de Guimaraes visit the Estadio da Luz for Primeira Liga matchday eight, kick-off at 19:00 Paris time, and they arrive as the perfect opponent for a side looking to bite back. Fourteenth in the table. One league win all season. Five goals in seven games.

Benfica, by contrast, have scored 22 league goals. Nobody in Portugal has more. Before the Porto game they’d won eight in a row across all competitions, including a 2-0 win at AC Milan in the Europa League and a 7-0 demolition of Casa Pia. The Porto defeat was the only league game all season in which they scored fewer than twice.

That loss came with an asterisk too. Clement Lenglet was sent off on 35 minutes with Benfica already a goal down. Alexander Bah levelled early in the second half, and ten men conceded twice inside ten minutes after that. Not a collapse. A side running out of legs a man short.

And the head-to-head? Brutal for the visitors. Benfica have won the last four meetings, scoring exactly three goals in each of the last three, including a 3-0 win at the Luz in March 2026. Vitoria have failed to score in any of those four defeats. Is there any reason to expect a different story on Sunday? Not much.

Benfica: 22 goals, eight for Pavlidis, and a point to prove after Porto Benfica

Vangelis Pavlidis has eight league goals already. He’s the top scorer in the Primeira Liga and he’s just signed an improved contract. That’s a striker in the mood.

The supporting cast has been just as busy. Casa Pia 7-0, Moreirense 4-0, Maritimo 3-0, Gil Vicente 3-1. When Benfica get on top of a weaker side, they don’t ease off. The only slip before Porto was the opening-day 2-2 draw with newly promoted Academico de Viseu, and they’ve looked a different team since.

The international break wasn’t kind, though. Georgiy Sudakov sprained his right ankle with Ukraine and is a doubt. Jakub Kaminski was sent home from the Poland camp with an adductor problem. Bah is struggling with a recurrence of a shoulder injury, and Enzo Barrenechea is out after knee surgery.

Lenglet is suspended after that red card in Porto, so Alessandro Circati could get his first start in central defence since arriving this summer. It’s a back line with a new face in it. Against this opponent, that’s a risk Silva can live with.

Even with the absences, the quality gap is enormous. Rafa Silva, Andreas Schjelderup and Gianluca Prestianni behind Pavlidis is still more firepower than anything Vitoria will see all month. Benfica can ill afford another dropped point in the title race, and they know it.

Vitoria Guimaraes: five league goals and five straight away defeats Vitoria Guimaraes

Here’s the number that sums them up. Vitoria have lost each of their last five league matches on the road. Five trips, five defeats.

The attack doesn’t offer much hope of fixing that. Five goals in seven league games. Only Casa Pia and Estoril Praia, the bottom two with three goals each, have scored fewer. Tiago Margarido’s side have one win all season, a 1-0 over Nacional on matchday three, and since then it’s been a defeat, a draw, a defeat, a draw.

That run tells its own story. A 1-0 loss at Braga, a goalless draw with Casa Pia, a 2-1 defeat at Academico de Viseu and a 1-1 with Moreirense that needed a stoppage-time equaliser from Toni Borevkovic. Hard work for very little.

The squad situation isn’t helping. Alioune Ndoye serves the second game of a three-match ban, and Gustavo Silva is doubtful with a thigh injury picked up early in the Moreirense draw. Arnel Jakupovic and Patrick Ouotro are the options in attack. The positives? Oliwier Zych, Tony Strata, Matija Mitrovic and Lohann Doucet are all back in training after international duty, and Beni Mukendi and Telmo Arcanjo have returned too.

A 1-0 friendly win at Chaves during the break counts for very little. Vitoria haven’t scored against Benfica in their last four defeats to them, and the attack hasn’t improved since. The Luz, against a stung home side, is the last place you’d want to go looking for a turnaround.

Probable lineup Benfica: Soares; Banjaqui, T. Araujo, Circati, Dahl; Aursnes, Palhinha; Rafa Silva, Schjelderup, Prestianni; Pavlidis
Probable lineup Vitoria Guimaraes: Zych; Strata, Borevkovic, Balieiro, Mendes; Mukendi, Doucet; M. Nogueira, Alan, Camara; Jakupovic

Our prediction: Benfica to win by two or more goals (Benfica -1.5 handicap)

Benfica have scored at least twice in every league game this season except the one at Porto. Vitoria have scored five all season, have lost five straight away games and haven’t scored in their last four defeats to Benfica. The gap in attacking output is massive.

The straight home win is too short to be worth backing, so the handicap is the play. Benfica won the last three meetings by scoring three each time, beat Vitoria 3-0 at the Luz in March, and come into this game angry after Porto. Expect a fast start and a long afternoon for the visitors’ defence.

Benfica -1.5 is the pick. The injuries to Sudakov, Kaminski and Barrenechea thin the squad, but against an attack this blunt, two goals of breathing space shouldn’t be a stretch. Check the price before kick-off.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
