NFL football action ahead of Bears at Packers

NFL: Bears lose RB Kyle Monangai for Packers trip

Monangai out with turf toe

The Bears will go to Green Bay without their lead back. Kyle Monangai has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Packers with a toe injury. He was seen in a walking boot this week and did not practice at all.

The timing stings. Monangai carried 30 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns in last Sunday’s 23-12 win over the New York Jets. He leads Chicago with 324 rushing yards and shares the team lead with three rushing touchdowns, so this is not a depth piece going down.

Swift takes over, with questions

D’Andre Swift is expected to handle most of the work. He is not exactly fresh. Swift sat out Wednesday with hip and knee issues and was limited on Thursday. Against the Jets he ran 15 times for 58 yards and lost a fumble, his second since Week 2.

He did not dodge it. “I know that’s not me,” Swift said, calling the fumbling something he will not let become a habit. Swift has 311 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns himself, just behind Monangai on the season totals, so the production gap between the two backs has been small.

What it means on Sunday

Chicago is 3-1 and Green Bay is 2-2, which makes this a real early test at Lambeau. A team that just leaned on one back for 30 carries now needs a banged-up replacement to hold onto the ball in a loud road environment. Ball security becomes the story. If Swift fumbles again, the Packers get short fields, and the Bears lose their easiest way to control the clock.
