A first natural hat trick
Logan Stankoven had never scored three in an NHL game. Thursday night in Raleigh, he did it, and Carolina beat Vancouver 7-2 at the Lenovo Center.
The AP called it a natural hat trick, and it came with a first: one of the goals was short-handed, the first of his career, and another arrived on the power play. The night also took him to 100 career points.
Sean Walker was the quiet engine. He picked up four assists, a career high for a defenseman who had never had more than two in a game before.

Carolina buried it early
The reigning Stanley Cup champions led 3-0 after the first period. Andrei Svechnikov scored twice on the power play and K’Andre Miller added the third. By the end Carolina had three power-play goals and a 34-20 edge in shots.
Kevin Lankinen allowed six goals on 18 shots and gave way to Leevi Merilainen after two periods. Jake DeBrusk scored both Vancouver goals, each on a wrist shot with Elias Pettersson picking up an assist. Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 18 of 20 for the Hurricanes.
Where both teams stand
Carolina is 3-1-1 and has won three straight. Vancouver fell to 2-3-0, and this was only the first game of a six-game road trip. The Canucks play at New Jersey on Saturday. The Hurricanes visit Chicago that night.
