WNBA: Clark rejects racist abuse aimed at Mitchell

Clark answers after Mitchell’s message

Caitlin Clark did not dodge it. Speaking at her end-of-season press conference on Thursday, the Indiana Fever guard said racist rhetoric and hate directed at teammate Kelsey Mitchell is “not something I stand for.”

The comments follow what Mitchell said on Saturday. She told reporters she has received hateful private messages on social media and has taken “a lot of flak just from being on (Clark’s) team.” Clark said it upset her as a teammate, and that she does not want anyone in the locker room to go through that. She tied her stance to how she was raised, and acknowledged that the attention that follows her brings good and bad with it.

A season that ended early, and a free-agent question

The Fever’s year finished on October 1 with a Game 3 loss to the Las Vegas Aces in a best-of-three first-round series. Mitchell, 30, is a four-time All-Star and could hit free agency this offseason. She said it is too early to decide her future.

Clark made her feelings plain. She hopes Mitchell stays in Indianapolis and called her the teammate she would most like to share a backcourt with.

The numbers explain why. Mitchell started all 44 games in her ninth season with the Fever and averaged 24.7 points and 2.8 assists. Clark, 24, made 40 starts and averaged 22.3 points, 8.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds. Two guards producing like that is not easy to replace, and the Fever know it as the offseason opens.
