Seattle Seahawks vs San Francisco 49ers: an unbeaten visitor walks into the champions’ house NFL

Four games, four wins, and the best underlying numbers in football. San Francisco lead the league in DVOA, net yards per play, EPA per play and success rate. On Sunday they take all of that to Lumen Field, where the champions are waiting.

Seattle won Super Bowl LX by beating New England 29-13, and they’ve opened the defence of that title at 3-1. Kick-off is at 4:25 p.m. ET on FOX, which means 22:25 Paris time. The league moved this game into the national window for a reason: nothing else on the afternoon slate carries this much weight.

The market makes Seattle a 3-point favourite. The Seahawks are 1.65 on the moneyline, the 49ers 2.30, and the total’s set at 47.5.

A home favourite against the only unbeaten side in the division. That doesn’t happen by accident. It’s happening because Seattle shut this San Francisco offence down in the last two meetings, January’s divisional-round win at Lumen Field included.

The NFC West might be the strongest division in football this year, with these two and the Rams all in the conversation. Combined record of the teams on the field Sunday: 7-1. Somebody’s perfect start or somebody’s home record takes a hit.

Seattle are 7-3 against the spread in their last ten games. San Francisco are 6-4 against the number across the last ten meetings between the clubs, and the Under has landed in six of those ten. These two know each other inside out, and it usually shows on the scoreboard.

Who blinks first? Brock Purdy has played his way to second in the MVP market. Mike Macdonald has built the defence most likely to make him uncomfortable. That’s the game.

Seattle Seahawks: a top-two defence propping up a run game ranked 29th Seattle Seahawks

Nineteen net passing yards. That’s what Seattle allowed Justin Herbert and the Chargers in the first half last weekend, and it’s why this unit still sits second in the defensive rankings heading into Week 5.

The Seahawks have lost once all season, 33-31 in Washington, a defeat that snapped a 12-game winning run. Before that, they opened by beating New England 13-10 and intercepted Drake Maye on each of the Patriots’ last three drives. This is a side that knows what it’s about.

The problem’s on the ground. Jadarian Price, their Week 1 starting running back, is on injured reserve, and Seattle rank 29th in rushing EPA. That makes uncomfortable reading for a team that likes to control games.

So Sam Darnold carries more of the load. He missed time early with a soft-tissue injury picked up on the fifth snap of the season, but he’s back and healthy, and his link with Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the sharpest weapon this offence owns.

Leonard Williams, Ty Okada and Chazz Surratt are all listed as questionable. Williams is the one to watch. If he plays, the interior push on Purdy looks very different.

Macdonald won’t need asking twice to send pressure. He never does.

San Francisco 49ers: the league’s most efficient offence, minus Bosa and Juszczyk San Francisco 49ers

Nick Bosa is out. Kyle Juszczyk is doubtful, so is safety Marques Sigle, and James Thompson Jr. has been ruled out. For a side that’s been close to flawless, this is the first week the injury list really bites.

Juszczyk matters more than the headlines suggest. The fullback is a big part of how Kyle Shanahan’s run game creates its angles, and without him the blocking schemes get simpler. Seattle’s front will notice. Bosa’s absence hurts the other way: less heat on Darnold, more time for Smith-Njigba to get open.

Then there’s Purdy. He leads the league in adjusted EPA per play and success rate, ranks ninth in completion percentage over expected, and trails only Josh Allen in the MVP odds. The numbers don’t lie. He’s been the best quarterback in football for a month.

But look at who they’ve played. Two of the four wins came against Miami and Arizona, and the Cardinals still put 30 on them in a 36-30 game. This is a very good team that hasn’t yet faced a defence of Seattle’s quality.

The opener was impressive, no argument: 27-7 over the Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of more than 100,000 people.

Lumen Field in October is a different exam altogether. Not an easy place to keep a perfect record.

Free NFL Prediction: Seattle Seahawks vs San Francisco 49ers

Our prediction: Seattle Seahawks to win at 1.65

Seattle at home, with the better defence and a coach who’s had Shanahan’s number twice in a row. San Francisco’s efficiency is real, but losing Bosa takes the bite out of their pass rush and losing Juszczyk blunts the run game. Those are two very specific holes against a very specific opponent.

Laying three points at even money is the alternative, but in a game this tight the moneyline at 1.65 is the cleaner position. A field goal settles this kind of game as often as not, and we’d rather not be on the wrong side of a push.

The case builds from the defence. Herbert managed 19 net passing yards in a half here last week. Purdy’s a far better quarterback, but he’ll face the same pressure in the same building, without his best pass rusher on the other side to even things up. Seahawks to win.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We can’t be held responsible for that.
