Tennis : Alcaraz defends his Tokyo title against Lehecka

A title to close the recovery chapter

Carlos Alcaraz is still the king of Tokyo. The world No. 3 kept his title on Tuesday by beating Czech Jiri Lehecka (No. 19) 7-6 (7/4), 6-4. It is his first trophy since returning from injury at the US Open at the end of August.

A tie-break to open, one more break to close: the 23-year-old Spaniard held his nerve in the tight moments of a final played on a knife-edge.

A long road since Barcelona

Alcaraz’s previous title came at the Doha ATP 500 in mid-February. In Tokyo he was playing his first final since April, and his defeat to Jannik Sinner at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000.

The following week, in Barcelona, the Spaniard hurt his right wrist. The injury started an absence of more than four months. This Japanese title closes a difficult stretch and gives his late-season campaign a boost.
