Two names, one trainer’s table
Day one, and the 49ers were already counting bodies. Christian Kirk strained his calf on Sunday, the opening practice of San Francisco’s 2026 training camp. He sat out Monday. Offensive lineman Vederian Lowe went down too, with a high-ankle sprain.
The team confirmed both injuries on Monday. Neither carries a firm timeline. Calf strains rarely do, and Kirk knows the routine. He has fought lower-leg trouble for years, including a hamstring problem that cost him two games last season and a calf strain in the 2024 preseason.

Room for a rookie
Kirk arrived this offseason to steady a receiver room that needed a veteran voice. His absence now hands early reps to De’Zhaun Stribling, the second-round rookie who gets a longer look while the starter recovers.
Lowe’s ankle matters just as much up front. High-ankle sprains tend to linger for weeks, and San Francisco can ill afford holes on a line still fitting new pieces together.
A camp that keeps testing San Francisco
None of this feels new for the 49ers, a team that spent last season wrestling its own medical report. The staff wanted a clean opening. It got two players in the training room before the first weekend closed.
