Tennis : Jannik Sinner puts Madrid second to his Roland-Garros physical build-up

Strict priorities for the clay-court schedule

Sinner’s camp has laid out the plan for the clay swing. The Madrid Masters 1000 is under way, but the world No.1 has made it clear where the real focus lies. Spain is just a warm-up act. The whole operation is geared toward the Paris Grand Slam, running from 24 May – 7 June. Every bit of the 24-year-old’s physical preparation is being pointed at that one target.

There is still one gap on the Italian’s record. The French Open remains the only major missing from his collection. His 2025 run ended with defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. But his recent Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 win was another sign his game is settling nicely on clay. A fifth straight Masters 1000 title is still there for the taking in Spain.

Ballistics, altitude and the numbers game

The Madrid record books do, though, demand a bit of caution. Sinner has never got beyond the quarter-finals at this event. He sees that as no coincidence, pointing to the unique conditions in the Spanish capital. The Caja Magica can be a strange place to play, with the altitude and the wind making life awkward and the ball do odd things. It takes serious adjustment to keep the game on the rails.

Checking the rival injury file

Madrid has also been shaken up by a major late change. Organisers confirmed that Carlos Alcaraz, now world No.2, has withdrawn on medical advice. The issue is a wrist injury. Sinner has already spoken about the pull-out.

The Spaniard is still being kept under close medical watch over whether he will be fit for Roland-Garros. His team are not willing to take any chances with a possible setback. Sinner also pointed to the simple logic of the rankings. With the ATP standings as they are, the chances of the pair meeting before the final are basically pushed to the very end of any tournament.
