PSG – Bayern Munich : A Historic Semi-Final

The freak statistical outlier and the finishing clinic

The first-leg Champions League semi-final produced a wildly unusual attacking split. The final score finished 5-4 in Paris Saint-Germain’s favour against Bayern Munich. You have to go back to 1960 in the continental record books to find another nine-goal total at this stage, when Eintracht Frankfurt beat Glasgow Rangers 6-3. In the modern knockout era, only one bigger oddity stands out: Barcelona against Bayern Munich, a 2-8 hammering in 2020.

Paris were ruthless. Five shots on target, five goals. Perfect. Twelve attempts overall, five of them ending in the net. Bayern were hardly toothless either, converting 50% of their eight shots on target.

Firsts, milestones and the individual audit

A new national milestone has now been set. Three French players — Ousmane Dembélé, Dayot Upamecano and Michael Olise — all scored in a Champions League semi-final of this type. The individual numbers are just as striking. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has now racked up 10 knockout-stage goals since arriving in January 2025. Ousmane Dembélé is up to 11. The Georgian winger also has 10 goals in this season’s competition, behind only Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane.

Désiré Doué has been directly involved in 13 knockout-stage goals. That’s a serious benchmark for a player still well short of the 21-and-under bracket.

Historic resets for the structure

Paris hit five goals for the fourth time in this season’s European campaign. The previous victims were Leverkusen, Tottenham and Chelsea, all put to the sword in different style. It is the club’s highest mark in competition history. Luis Enrique has now reached 50 Champions League wins in 77 matches, bettering Pep Guardiola’s benchmark of 80 games. His side has also crossed the 100-goal mark in 44 matches.

At the back, though, Paris leaked four. The last time they conceded that many at home was in November 2006, when Hapoel Tel Aviv won 4-0 in the UEFA Cup. And in a wider French context, PSG have joined a very short list of French clubs to beat Bayern Munich at home in a knockout tie. The only previous example came from AS Saint-Etienne in 1969.
