Victor Wembanyama featured in game one of the series against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He posted a triple-double in the contest. His final line read 11 points, 15 rebounds and 12 blocks.
The offensive numbers were far from eye-catching. He hit 5 of his 17 shots and went 0 for 8 from beyond the arc. Minnesota’s defence kept him out of his comfort zone around the rim.
A new league record for Wembanyama
The 12 blocks set a new official benchmark in playoff history. The previous record stood at 10. That mark had been shared by three former players: Andrew Bynum, Hakeem Olajuwon and Mark Eaton.
The NBA has tracked that figure since the 1973/74 season. Unofficial records suggest Wilt Chamberlain may have gone past it. Some observers credited him with 16 similar defensive plays back in 1969.

The numbers may still change
The league office still has to review the game tape. Wembanyama’s block total could be reduced. Basketball rules outlaw certain defensive plays.
Officials can wipe out a block in two specific cases. The first is touching the ball after it has hit the backboard. The second is interfering with the ball on its way down toward the rim. The NBA will confirm the final figure once that review is done.
