The build-up and the first half
The New York Knicks faced the Philadelphia 76ers. New York took this second meeting, winning 108 to 102. Philadelphia played without center Joel Embiid. Head coach Nick Nurse was also dealing with a personal bereavement.
Philadelphia came flying out of the blocks. Paul George knocked down three three-pointers, and the scoreboard showed 15 to 8. Quentin Grimes and Kelly Oubre hit from deep as well. For the Knicks, Mitchell Robinson was sidelined by illness. Ariel Hukporti and Karl-Anthony Towns each picked up three fouls in no time at all. Towns went to the bench early in the second quarter after only 8 minutes on the floor.
Closing the gap in the second and third quarters
Tyrese Maxey put up 15 points in the second period. Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby kept New York’s offense moving. Philadelphia still held the lead at the break, with the score at 62 to 61 after a late VJ Edgecombe basket.
Towns returned after halftime. He was making plays and scoring too. Anunoby became more active on the offensive end. The 76ers stayed in front thanks to the shooting of Edgecombe and George. The third quarter ended with Philadelphia ahead 90 to 89.

The final minutes and the numbers
Kelly Oubre sank two free throws and a three-pointer. Philadelphia pushed the lead out to 99 to 96. Then the Knicks ripped off a 9-0 run. Josh Hart buried a three. Brunson added two baskets. Mikal Bridges stroked a mid-range jumper. Suddenly it was 105 to 99. Philadelphia’s shooting dipped badly, with just 5 made threes from 17 attempts in the second half.
The individual numbers tell the story for New York. Brunson finished with 26 points. Anunoby added 24. Towns posted 20 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists.
