Masters 1000 : Arthur Fils’ possible path in Italy

The draw and the early rounds

The organisers have released the full draw for the Rome Masters 1000. The tournament runs from 6 to 17 May. Arthur Fils is currently ranked 17th in the world. The French player will open his campaign on Friday or Saturday. His opponent will be Luca Nardi or a qualifier.

The schedule then points to a meeting with Frances Tiafoe or Lorenzo Sonego. The draw also throws up a possible clash with Jannik Sinner in the round of 16. The Italian sits at No.1 in the world. Rome is the last major stop before Roland-Garros gets underway. The French Open is set for 24 May to 7 June.

Arthur Fils’ recent form

Arthur Fils reached the Madrid semi-finals last week. The 21-year-old spent eight months out while recovering from a back injury. He returned to action and promptly won the Barcelona title.

His recent run also includes four semi-final appearances. Those came in Doha, Miami, Barcelona and Madrid.

Jannik Sinner’s numbers

Jannik Sinner won the Madrid title last time out. ATP figures show a serious winning streak. He has taken the last five Masters 1000 events. That list includes Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo and Madrid.

ATP officials say it is a record for the men’ s tour. The Italian starts in Rome on a 23-match winning run.
