NFL: Daniels Could Start in London as Elbow Heals Fast

Daniels makes the trip

Jayden Daniels is on the plane, and that already says plenty. The Commanders quarterback dislocated his left elbow, yet the joint is healing faster than the team expected. He flew to London with the squad and could start Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts if he clears the next two days of practice.

He was limited at Wednesday’s session. Coach Dan Quinn kept the message measured. “We’ll get him into the mix and see what the next three days look like,” Quinn said. If Daniels cannot go, Marcus Mariota takes his second straight start.

Mariota did not embarrass himself last time out. He went 19 of 31 for 183 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers in a 33-31 home win over Seattle, and he added a 9-yard run. Receiver Terry McLaurin backed him publicly, but also made clear who the offense wants. “When he’s been in there, we believe wholeheartedly he could give us a chance to win football games,” McLaurin said.

Washington’s injury list

The Commanders travel thin in places. Guard Sam Cosmi (concussion) and Nick Cross (illness) stayed home. Lucas Patrick (foot) and Nick Allegretti (hip) were limited, Rachaad White is getting treatment on a shoulder, and Austin Ekeler (Achilles) could return.

The Colts on the other side

Indianapolis arrives at 1-2 after a 19-17 win over Houston, sealed by Spencer Shrader’s 53-yard field goal. Running back Jonathan Taylor has piled up 258 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and coach Shane Steichen expects trouble from a Washington defense that is “very multiple,” with “a lot of pressures” and “a lot of blitzes.”

Shrader, for his part, is enjoying the setting. “I kind of envisioned that one day, I’d play in those stadiums and be kicking a circular ball around,” he said. The Colts lead the all-time series 21-11, a gap Washington would love to trim in London.

Indianapolis also has Mo Alie-Cox (illness) and Ashton Dulin (ankle) sitting out practice, with Akeem Davis-Gaither (knee) limited.
