Andy Burnham didn’t hide his concern. The Labour politician, who served as mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 to June 2026, told the BBC on Wednesday he would be “very worried” if Manchester City’s Emirati owners decided to leave. His comments come as the club faces possible sanctions after being found guilty of “serious” financial breaches committed between 2009 and 2018.
“I thank City Football Group and the owners more broadly for the money they’ve invested not just in the Etihad and the campus around it, but in the city,” he said.

Asked whether he feared the Emirati owners might sell the club, Burnham didn’t mince his words: “I would be very worried to see them go. They’ve been a huge partner in the transformation of Manchester. And of course, in making Manchester City the world-class club it is today.”
