Two swings in the first inning set the tone
Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado each homered in the first, two batters apart, off Matthew Boyd, and the game never really recovered for Chicago. Xander Bogaerts added a 399-foot shot to left in the fourth after an eight-pitch at-bat. All three homers came off Boyd’s changeup, a pitch that hung in the zone all night.
Padres 8, Cubs 0. Overnight, San Diego took Game 1 of the NL wild-card series and now sits one win from the division round.

King nearly finishes what he started
Michael King carried a no-hit bid deep into the seventh. Nico Hoerner ended it with an infield single with one out in the inning. King finished with seven scoreless innings, one hit, three walks and eight strikeouts. The Cubs went 0-for-20 through seven innings, and Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman combined for 0-for-7 with six strikeouts.
After the game Tatis pointed to the clubhouse. “We’re one,” he said. “We’re coming together as one group. At-bat after at-bat, we trust each other.”
What comes next
The series is best-of-three, so Chicago has no margin left. Game 2 is Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT). A Padres win ends it and sends them to the NLDS. A Cubs win forces a decider, and a lineup that managed one hit will need to find its swing fast.
