A Third First-Round Arm in East Rutherford
Jaxson Dart goes down, and the Giants don’t scramble. They dial a number they’ve had on speed dial for weeks. J.J. McCarthy is now theirs, sent over by the Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round pick, pending a physical.
New York didn’t wait around. Dart’s knee injury ended his season two weeks into it, and Jameis Winston’s fill-in performance against Tennessee on Sunday, a 12-7 win built entirely on field goals, made it obvious the offense needed another arm in the building. McCarthy gives them one, and an intriguing one at that.
The Giants now roll with three former first-round quarterbacks on the roster: Dart, Winston and McCarthy. Only six other franchises in the common draft era have carried that kind of quarterback room at once.

A Rough Two Years in Minnesota
McCarthy went 10th overall, and little has gone to plan since. A torn meniscus wiped out his rookie season before it started. Year two brought a concussion, a fractured wrist and a sprained ankle, limiting him to ten total starts. The numbers from that stretch: a 57.6 percent completion rate, 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, with 181 yards and four scores on the ground.
By September, he’d fallen to third on Minnesota’s depth chart, behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz. A former top-ten pick watching two other quarterbacks split reps in front of him is not where the Vikings pictured this going when they drafted him.
What Changes for the Giants
McCarthy isn’t guaranteed the job the moment he clears his physical, but the door is open. Winston has stabilized things, not electrified them, and a healthy, athletic 23-year-old with rushing ability changes the calculus for a Giants team still hunting its offensive identity. Dart remains the long-term plan whenever he’s healthy again. For now, New York gambled a late-round pick on finding out whether McCarthy just needed a change of scenery.
