Ekeler Returns to Washington
Austin Ekeler is heading back to the Commanders. Multiple reports on Monday morning confirmed the veteran running back is expected to sign with Washington, pending a physical. No committee meeting, no long courtship. Just a phone call and a flight.
Ekeler tore his Achilles tendon in Week 2 last season, an injury that ended his year before it really started. He spent the offseason rehabbing, then worked out for the Panthers in recent weeks. Carolina passed. Washington didn’t.

An Offense Suddenly Short on Bodies
The timing isn’t a coincidence. Rachaad White went down with a shoulder injury in Sunday’s win over the Seahawks, and Jeremy McNichols is already parked on injured reserve. That leaves Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Kaytron Allen as the only healthy backs on Washington’s 53-man roster. A team that just beat Seattle can’t afford to run out of legs at the position.
Before the injury, Ekeler carried the ball 77 times for 367 yards and four touchdowns in a Commanders uniform, numbers that show he still had juice left even heading toward his 30s. He’s never been a bruiser. He’s a change-of-pace back who catches the ball out of the backfield and turns a five-yard checkdown into fifteen.
What Comes Next
If the physical clears, Ekeler slots in immediately as depth behind Croskey-Merritt, with a real path to touches given his pass-catching skill set. Washington’s coaching staff has already worked with him, which cuts down on the usual adjustment period for a midseason addition.
The Commanders don’t need him to be the 2019 version of himself who racked up over 1,500 yards from scrimmage. They need him healthy, available, and reliable on third down. For a team trying to build on a statement win over Seattle, that might be enough.
