Last place doesn’t always tell the story
Sporting Kansas City arrived at Shell Energy Stadium with the worst record in Major League Soccer, 6-17-3 before kickoff, and left with a result that had nothing to do with a table. Andre Luiz opened the scoring in the 27th minute, finishing off a pass from Stephen Afrifa, and Calvin Harris doubled the lead right before the break, set up by Luiz himself. Houston, competing for top spot in the Western Conference, never recovered.
Things got worse for the hosts in first-half stoppage time. Hector Herrera picked up a straight red card for violent conduct, and Houston played the entire second half with ten men trying to chase a two-goal deficit against a team with nothing left to lose.

A rare shutout for a struggling side
Goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland made four saves for Kansas City’s first clean sheet of the season, a number that says plenty about how the year has gone for a team now sitting on 21 points from 26 matches. Luiz has been one of the few bright spots: in five appearances since arriving, he has four goals and an assist, a scoring rate that would be remarkable on a title contender, let alone the league’s bottom club. Harris has now factored into goals in back-to-back matches for the first time all season.
Houston’s collapse fits a pattern. A week earlier, the Dynamo had surrendered a stoppage-time equalizer in a 2-2 draw with Cincinnati, and Saturday’s defeat marked a second straight frustrating result at home for a club that still sits at 13-9-5 and 44 points, well inside playoff position but suddenly shakier than its spot in the standings suggests.
Two results, same lesson
Kansas City has now won two of its last four matches, a modest streak but a meaningful one for a club with little else to play for this season. For Houston, the concern is more immediate: a team built to challenge for the West’s top seed has now dropped points against Cincinnati and lost outright to the division’s weakest side inside the space of eight days, right as the postseason picture starts to take shape.
