Down 3-0, Up in Fourteen Minutes
Austin FC trailed San Diego 3-0 with just over 25 minutes to play and looked finished. San Diego had turned three second-half chances into three goals inside fourteen minutes, and a comfortable road win looked assured after a first half in which Austin dominated the ball without scoring.
Anibal Godoy opened the account in the 50th minute, pouncing on a rebound off Oscar Verhoeven’s shot. Seven minutes later, Cedric Bakambu’s header deflected off two Austin defenders and into their own net. San Diego needed just seven more minutes to make it three, Anders Dreyer and Bakambu combining on a give-and-go that ended with Marcus Ingvartsen finishing from close range. San Diego hadn’t managed a single shot in the first half. They scored three times in fourteen minutes of the second.

Then Ramirez Happened, Twice
Brandon Vazquez started the comeback in the 73rd minute, diving to head home a cross from Ervin Torres. Christian Ramirez took over from there, heading in a cross from Jon Bell in the 82nd minute, then running onto a feed from Jon Gallagher four minutes later to bury the equalizer. Two goals in four minutes from the same player, both born out of chances Austin had been generating without reward since kickoff.
The draw stretches Austin’s unbeaten run to eight matches, three wins and five draws in that stretch, and lifts the Verde to 31 points. San Diego, level with them at 32, will point to a first half in which they didn’t register a single shot yet still found themselves 3-0 up by the 64th minute. That’s the version of this match that will sting more in San Diego than the one Austin will remember.
Ramirez’s two goals came from two different providers, Jon Bell then Jon Gallagher four minutes apart, a reminder that Austin’s comeback wasn’t built around one delivery man feeding one finisher. Vazquez’s headed opener came from yet a third source, Ervin Torres. Three different players, three different service routes, one player finishing two of them.
A Draw That Reads Like Two Different Games
Damian Las made three saves for Austin and Duran Ferree two for San Diego, modest numbers for a match that produced six goals and two very different halves. Both sides leave with a point they’ll interpret in opposite ways.
