Eleven Seconds Was All It Took
Jordan Kyrou needed all of eleven seconds in overtime to end it. The Washington Capitals beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 at Capital One Arena on Friday, closing out their preseason slate with a statement that will matter more once real points are on the line.
Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson both finished with a goal and an assist, giving Washington secondary scoring to lean on beyond its top options. Logan Thompson stopped 20 of 22 shots in net, while Jeremy Swayman kept Boston in it with 32 saves at the other end. The Bruins had chances. They just didn’t have the finish Kyrou provided.

A Trade That’s Starting to Pay Off
Kyrou arrived in Washington this offseason in a deal that sent assets back to St. Louis, and one overtime winner in a preseason game won’t settle the debate on that trade by itself. But it’s the kind of moment a new team wants from a marquee addition before the games start counting. Washington has now layered Kyrou onto a core that already includes Strome, Wilson and Alex Ovechkin, and the depth showed up on the scoresheet Friday.
Boston, for its part, gets a reminder of how thin the margins are early in camp. Swayman’s 32 saves kept it a one-goal game deep into the third period, and it took a golden opportunity in overtime to finally beat him.
Elsewhere on the Slate
The Rangers closed out their own preseason finale in style, beating the Islanders 6-1 at UBS Arena. Mika Zibanejad and J.T. Miller each had a goal and an assist, and Adam Fox set up three of New York’s six goals. Igor Shesterkin made 15 saves in the win, while Semyon Varlamov allowed six goals on 27 shots for an Islanders team still searching for answers before opening night.
