Leeds coach Brad Arthur didn’t hide his frustration afterward. “That penalty should not be deciding a game of that magnitude,” he said, still processing how a semi-final swung on a single call. His players had matched Warrington blow for blow all night, Ryan Hall and Jake Connor both crossing for tries, and they had one more shot to level it.
Jake Connor lined up a 62-meter penalty with no time left on the clock. It fell short. Warrington cleared their lines and the celebrations started.

Eight Years in the Waiting
Warrington last reached a Grand Final in 2018, and lost. Since then, semi-final exits, near misses, and a squad that kept promising more than it delivered. James Bentley and Luke Yates scored the tries that got them here this time, and coach Sam Burgess wasn’t about to get carried away with it. “There’s nothing to celebrate about yet,” he said. “We want to enjoy this week and make the most of it.”
That restraint says something about where Warrington have been. A club with plenty of history and not enough recent silverware, still chasing the version of itself that used to win these things regularly.
Old Trafford Awaits
The second semi-final is set for Saturday, September 26, with Wigan Warriors hosting Wakefield Trinity for the right to face Warrington. Whoever survives that meets the Wolves at Old Trafford on Saturday, October 3, kickoff 6pm, for the Super League Grand Final, a fixture that has been played at the Manchester United ground every year since 1998.
Leeds, for their part, are left replaying a 66th-minute penalty for the rest of the off-season.
