The title race is over for Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton is no longer chasing the championship. He sits more than 100 points behind leader Kimi Antonelli, a gap that widened further after his DNF in Madrid, and he says so without dressing it up. His focus now sits on a different target: catching Mercedes’ George Russell for second place in the standings.
Hamilton still frames the season as progress for Ferrari despite the numbers. “If at the end of the year, managing to stay in the top three, even second, I think would be a huge achievement for us as a team,” he said. The Scuderia has taken just one podium across its last five races, Charles Leclerc’s runner-up finish in Belgium, and trails Mercedes by 145 points in the constructors’ standings.

Russell keeps swinging too
Russell is not conceding anything either. He says he will “keep fighting every single race,” even with his own deficit to Antonelli mounting. That leaves two of the grid’s biggest names fighting each other for a runner-up spot neither pictured chasing at the start of the year.
McLaren adds pressure from the other side. The papaya team has beaten Ferrari in four straight races and has cut the constructors’ gap to just 52 points, turning what looked like a comfortable cushion into a live fight heading into the final rounds.
Baku raises the stakes
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix, a circuit team principal Frederic Vasseur has called a “very specific challenge,” gives Ferrari an immediate chance to close ground on both fronts. Execution has been the team’s repeated weak point this season. Baku is where that has to change.
