A 41-year-old ban back on the table
Pints in the stands. That is the idea Prime Minister Andy Burnham has just put back on the table, and he is not hiding his reasoning. Burnham wants to scrap the 1985 law that keeps alcohol out of view inside grounds across England’s top five football divisions.
His argument comes down to fairness. Rugby league fans can drink pitchside. Concertgoers can drink in the front row. Football supporters, watching what Burnham considers comparable crowds, cannot. He wants that gap closed.

Clubs willing to talk, police not convinced
The Premier League and the EFL have both signalled they are open to discussion. The Football Supporters’ Association has gone a step further, backing an actual trial rather than just a conversation. A Sky Sports poll found 65% of supporters in favour of legalising drinking in the stands.
The UK Football Policing Unit is not on board. Officials argue that rugby league and concerts simply do not produce the disorder football does, and that alcohol keeps turning up as a factor in incidents inside grounds. “Other sports simply don’t see the violence and criminal behaviour from their supporters that football does,” the unit said in response to Burnham’s comments.
Nothing decided yet
No law has changed. But with two of English football’s governing bodies open to the idea and public opinion leaning the same way, the 1985 restriction looks less fixed than it has in decades. Whether the Football Supporters’ Association gets its trial is now the question that matters, not whether the conversation happens at all.
