An injury picked up on Canada duty
It happened in training with Canada, well away from the glare of Ligue 1. Derek Cornelius was in a small-sided game against his team-mate Jonathan David when his knee got stuck in the turf during the challenge. The hip took the full impact. Jesse Marsch, the Canada boss, watched his player collapse in pain.
The medical staff immediately drew the comparison. “We suspect it looks like what Promise David went through, a torn hip tendon in February. We hope it is not serious, but he could be out for several months,” Marsch said. Promise David, a Canadian striker who had a spell in Ligue 1, missed a long stretch of action after a similar injury this winter.

A loan return already going badly
The timing could hardly be worse for Cornelius. The 28-year-old defender had only just come back from a year on loan at Rangers, where he had found some rhythm in Scotland. Since returning to Marseille this summer, he has made just three brief substitute appearances, for a total of 26 minutes on the pitch. Hardly enough to force his way into the picture.
OM could do without this blow. Marseille’s defence is already stretched thin, with tactical choices and a growing injury list since pre-season. A lengthy spell out for Cornelius would leave the club dipping even deeper into an already thin group in that area.
Caution before any diagnosis
Marsch was keen to play down panic around the player, stressing the support around him and the need for a proper diagnosis before anyone jumps to conclusions. Nothing has been confirmed yet on how serious the injury is. But the recent history of this kind of hip problem, involving another Canadian international, does not exactly encourage Marseille to stay calm.
