A shutout from the bullpen against the Padres
The Dodgers blanked San Diego 7-0. That win stretched their home streak to 11. Eight pitchers combined to lock down the shutout.
Justin Wrobleski picked up his 12th win of the season. Roki Sasaki made his return after a blister on his finger. He fanned two of the three batters he faced in his stint on the mound. The live test comes 10 days before the playoffs, with Los Angeles still trying to find the best October formula for its bullpen.
Young Josue De Paula also made an impact. The rookie, used as the designated hitter, had two hits and scored a run. More proof that the Dodgers’ depth goes well beyond the star names.

Freeman pulls the strings, with Edman and Smith close behind
Freddie Freeman drove in three runs. Los Angeles came out swinging in the second inning, putting up four runs after already having two outs. With the bases loaded, Tommy Edman and then Mookie Betts both drew walks to force in a run apiece, before Freeman cracked a two-run single.
Freeman added another RBI in the fourth. Tommy Edman launched his homer in the sixth for a second straight game with a long ball. Will Smith answered in the seventh, going deep for the third straight start. For San Diego, Michael King gave up five runs on six hits in four innings, his worst outing since 30 May.
A magic number that keeps shrinking
Los Angeles are back within one game of the Brewers, the National League leaders. The Dodgers’ magic number to clinch one of the top two seeds, and with it a first-round bye, is down to one.
San Diego slipped to just a second loss in 15 games. The Padres still have a magic number of two to book their playoff spot and chase a third straight trip to the postseason.
