F1: Hadjar extends Red Bull deal through 2027

Red Bull confirms the extension

Red Bull have made their call. Isack Hadjar will stay on as Max Verstappen’s team-mate for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The team confirmed the French driver’s contract extension on Wednesday, just days before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Hadjar, 21, is now in his second season with Red Bull after a 2025 campaign with Racing Bulls. He currently sits eighth in the drivers’ world championship. Team boss Laurent Mekies made no attempt to hide his satisfaction: “Since joining at the start of the year, he has been superb on and off the track, especially when you consider this is only his second Formula 1 season, which made it easy to decide on the contract extension.”

A seat with a brutal reputation

The second Red Bull seat has a reputation for chewing up drivers. Pierre Gasly, Alexander Albon, Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda have all struggled there, unable to live with Verstappen’s pace. Hadjar, though, has largely stood up to the challenge, even beating his celebrated team-mate on several occasions since the start of the season.

The Frenchman has only just returned from a wrist injury that kept him out for three races. He also got his Monaco podium back after his team won an appeal to the stewards.

All eyes on Baku

The extension could not have landed at a better time with a packed weekend ahead. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix takes place on Saturday 26 September in Baku, with two practice sessions scheduled for Thursday at 9.30 and 13.00. Red Bull will be hoping to keep the momentum rolling for its driver pairing on a fast street circuit where every mistake gets punished hard.

With this move, Red Bull has locked down its core for the next two seasons and shut down any talk of a reshuffle alongside the four-time world champion. It also, by extension, leaves the second Racing Bulls seat wide open, with several young drivers in the sister team hoping for a promotion in 2027.
