Buddy Hield is about to pull on his seventh NBA jersey. The Charlotte Hornets are acquiring the sharpshooting guard from Atlanta, ESPN reported Tuesday, in a deal that also sends point guard Ryan Nembhard and cash to the Hawks. Charlotte parts with forward Dorian Finney-Smith, and Nembhard is expected to be waived shortly after the trade clears.
The money matters too. Atlanta opens up a $2.1 million trade exception. Charlotte gets one worth $4.5 million.

2,201 threes and counting
That’s where Hield sits on the NBA’s all-time list, 15th, hitting 39.5% of them for his career. He hasn’t matched the version of himself that lit up Sacramento in 2018-19, averaging 20.7 points a night. Last season was rougher still. Splitting time between Golden State and Atlanta, the 33-year-old scored just 7.6 points per game, a career low.
The other half of the deal
Finney-Smith brings something different: defense. Over 628 career games he’s averaged 8.0 points and 4.4 rebounds, and he enters his 11th season, his third since leaving Dallas.
Nembhard, 23, went undrafted and posted 6.6 points and 5.3 assists last season before a three-team deal involving Oklahoma City sent him to Atlanta this summer. His stay there didn’t last long.
