Eight years, one direction
Bill Guerin isn’t going anywhere. The Minnesota Wild have extended their general manager, multiple outlets including ESPN reported Tuesday, a move that lands a week after head coach John Hynes signed his own multi-year deal.
Guerin heads into his eighth season running the front office. He has also held the title of president of hockey operations since 2023, a role that followed years in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ front office before Minnesota came calling. This spring kept him even busier than usual. He led the United States men’s team to gold at the 2026 Olympics.

104 points and a trophy
Minnesota’s GM of the Year award landed in June, after a 104-point season backed up the case. Twelve playoff appearances in 14 years is the kind of consistency most franchises would kill for. Getting past the second round, though, is a different story, one Guerin hasn’t cracked yet.
He keeps swinging anyway. Kirill Kaprizov signed an eight-year, $136 million extension last autumn, the richest contract in league history. Then came December, and a trade with Vancouver that brought Quinn Hughes to Minnesota.
Hughes could be next
Now the Wild are talking extension with Hughes himself. He’s 26, he won the Norris Trophy in 2023-24, and he’s set to hit free agency next summer. Locking him down would tighten Guerin’s grip on the roster he’s spent years building. Minnesota opens its 2026-27 season October 1 in Nashville.
