Football: Holdt treble as Spurs put seven past Palace

Forty-two shots and a hat-trick

Tottenham travelled to Crystal Palace on Matchday 3 of the Women’s Super League and took the game apart. Seven goals, 42 shots, and a match ball for Olivia Holdt.

That shot count is the third highest recorded in a WSL match and the highest ever produced by an away side. The Denmark international scored three of them to become only the second Tottenham player to take home a WSL match ball, after Martha Thomas against Aston Villa in October 2023.

Holdt has been building towards this. Since the start of February she has scored eight WSL goals. Only Khadija Shaw, with 12, has scored more across the competition in that window.

Eleven goals in three games for Martin Ho’s side

Spurs have now scored 11 times in their opening three league matches. The Palace win was the clearest sign yet of what Martin Ho has at his disposal in the final third, and Holdt’s case for a permanent starting role is getting harder to argue with.

The weekend produced late goals everywhere. Eight arrived from the 75th minute onwards across Matchday 3, the most on a single WSL matchday since the final round of the 2023-24 season. Everton beat West Ham through a Laia Codina own goal timed at 93:50, the latest own goal in WSL history to win a match for the opposition.

City roll on, Arsenal stall

Manchester City are the only side left with a perfect record, and Liverpool made them earn it. City led, fell 2-1 behind, then won 4-2. It was only the second time in their WSL history they have scored first, trailed, and still won, after a 3-2 victory over Reading in the 2017 Spring Series.

Shaw scored again to become the first player to find the net in each of City’s opening three matches of a WSL season. She now has 11 league goals against Liverpool, the first player to reach double figures against them in the competition.

Arsenal needed an equaliser timed at 94:32 against Manchester United to stretch their unbeaten run to 20 matches, a club record in the competition. They have scored twice in three games. Only in 2014 have they scored fewer at this stage of a WSL campaign.
