One chance, one goal
Liverpool had gone three league games without a win before Sunday afternoon at the Vitality Stadium. They needed one clear opening to end that, and Alexander Isak took it in the 57th minute, turning in a loose ball after James Hill’s block on Florian Wirtz looped kindly across the six-yard box.
It was Isak’s fourth goal in five league games this season. The context matters. Across the whole of last season he managed three in 14 Premier League appearances. Liverpool paid a club record fee for him and spent most of a year waiting for a return on it. Five weeks into this campaign he has already beaten his 2025-26 total.

Iraola’s homecoming, and a defence that stopped leaking
Andoni Iraola spent three seasons at Bournemouth before taking the Liverpool job, and his return to the south coast produced a result no Liverpool manager had managed in more than forty years. He is the first to go unbeaten through his first five league games in charge since Joe Fagan in September 1983, with two wins and three draws.
The clean sheet was a third in a row in the league, Liverpool’s longest such run since a sequence of four between May and September 2024. That number explains the win better than the attacking play did. Bournemouth’s best moment came inside ten minutes, when Alisson got down to tip away Evanilson’s improvised backheel flick, and the hosts never found a clearer one.
Cody Gakpo’s afternoon deserves a mention. He came close to leaving Anfield over the summer. He created three chances, level with Wirtz for the team high, and won nine of his sixteen duels, including the run down the right that led to the goal.
Rose still waiting
Bournemouth beat Real Sociedad in midweek in the first European game in the club’s history, then went into the international break still without a league win under Marco Rose. Five games, three draws, two defeats. Only Iraola’s own first season on the south coast, when they went nine matches without a win, has started worse for the club in the Premier League.
It was also the first time since a 1-0 defeat to Everton in December 2025 that Bournemouth lost a Premier League match without scoring.
