Eight goals and three lead changes
Manchester City beat Sunderland 5-3 this afternoon in Premier League round five. The result sends Enzo Maresca’s side to the top of the table after Arsenal’s defeat at Brighton earlier in the day.
It was a flyer from the off. Enzo Fernandez beat Roefs with a clever free kick in the 9th minute to score his first goal in a City shirt. Three minutes later, Brobbey levelled it up from an Enzo Le Fee pass.
Rayan Cherki put City back in front in the 30th. Brobbey struck again in the 33rd, once more played in by Le Fee. Antoine Semenyo made it 3-2 just before the break.

Brobbey bags a hat-trick in defeat
The second half did nothing to calm things down. Semenyo doubled the lead in the 57th minute after another Sunderland defensive mistake. Two minutes later, Brobbey completed his hat-trick to drag the Black Cats back to 4-3.
Regis Le Bris’s side pushed for an equaliser. It never came. Erling Haaland wrapped it up in the 83rd minute. Sunderland, who had just picked up their first Europa League win in midweek, leave the Etihad with three goals and no points.
Liverpool edge it, Leeds stall
In the same round of fixtures, Liverpool did the job at Bournemouth without ever really hitting top gear. One goal was enough: Alexander Isak broke the deadlock in the 57th minute, his fourth league goal of the season. The Reds stay in touch at the top end.
Leeds and Crystal Palace, meanwhile, played out a 0-0 draw. Chances came at both ends, and Tyrick Mitchell even had a goal ruled out in the 52nd minute, but neither defence gave an inch.
City are now top after five matches. But the bigger story is not just the table: conceding three at home, including a hat-trick from the same striker, gives Maresca plenty to think about before the next run of fixtures.
