Twenty-six days out, then back in
A left lat. That was what sent Huascar Brazoban to the injured list on August 25. Almost a month later, the Chicago White Sox activated him on Sunday, just before hosting the Detroit Tigers.
The 36-year-old right-hander did not arrive in Chicago with any savior label attached. He came over on August 3 in a trade from the New York Mets. Since then, he has made 10 relief appearances, thrown 10 innings and posted a 6.30 ERA. He has given up 12 hits, walked six and surrendered two home runs. Just five strikeouts.
With the Mets, it was a different story. A 5-2 record, a 2.56 ERA across 46 appearances. Same arm, very different numbers.

Murphy sent down as the bullpen shifts
To clear room, Chicago optioned left-hander Chris Murphy to Triple-A Charlotte. The 28-year-old leaves with a 3-0 record, one save and a 4.81 ERA in 33 appearances this season, including three starts.
These are the kind of moves that look minor in September. They are not always minor. A bullpen that holds together or falls apart at this stage can come down to two or three arms being available.
A playoff spot to protect
Because the White Sox are not just going through the motions. They currently sit third in the American League wild-card race, four games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles. Comfortable? Yes. Safe? Not even close.
In a September where schedules tighten and managers burn through relievers night after night, getting one more pitcher back changes the daily grind. Even if he is coming off a rough month. The question now is which Brazoban shows up on the mound: the one from New York or the one from Chicago.
