Rugby ball illustrating the NRLW elimination final between Brisbane and Newcastle

Rugby: Broncos rout Knights 40-16 to reach NRLW prelim

Fifty-six seconds, and it was already going one way

Brisbane scored inside a minute at Langlands Park earlier today. Jesse Southwell put up a bomb, Knights fullback Lucy Spain dropped it, and Romy Teitzel collected the scraps and went over. Newcastle did not complete a set of six until the 16th minute.

By then the defending premiers had added two more. Robinson weaved through five minutes after the opener and prop Shannon Mato forced her way over from close range. Teitzel grabbed her second, Tamika Upton scored, and an Upton grubber sent centre Georgia Bartlett in before the siren. Half-time read 34-0. Brisbane finished with seven tries to three.

Three former Knights did most of the damage

Upton, Southwell and Teitzel all left Newcastle for Brisbane, and all three ran the game against their old club. Upton probed from fullback until she was given an early mark 20 minutes from the end. Southwell controlled the tempo at number seven and kicked with precision. Teitzel dominated the right edge from second row.

Brianna Clark crashed over early in the second half to take Brisbane to 40. Newcastle then found some of the football they had not been able to play in the first 40 minutes, with Mercedez Taulelei-Siala, Shanice Parker and Sidney Taylor all crossing to make the scoreline respectable.

What it costs, and what comes next

Bree Spreadborough hurt an ankle. Lock Lillian Yarrow was placed on report for a lifting tackle, which the match review committee will settle during the week.

Brisbane have won four in a row and travel to a preliminary final against Gold Coast next weekend, a Queensland derby for a place in the decider. On the other side of the draw, Canberra knocked Wests Tigers out 6-0 on Friday for their first finals win in the competition.
