Kwon finished it in straight sets
Sumit Nagal never got a look. Kwon Soon-woo took the first set 6-1, the second 6-2, and South Korea were through. That reverse singles rubber in Seoul this morning closed out a 3-1 win over India in the second round of the Davis Cup Qualifiers, and it sent the hosts somewhere they had never been.
Korea are in the Final 8. No Asian nation had managed that since the competition moved to its current eight-team finale in 2022. The reward is Bologna from November 24 to 29, where defending champions and hosts Italy are already installed and six other qualifiers will join them.
The Davis Cup account called it the moment Korea secured a first Final 8 place, and the footage of the celebrations backed that up. For a federation with no history at this stage, the reaction fit.

India had one route back and took it
Friday had been brutal for the visitors. Kwon beat Nagal in the opening rubber, Hyeon Chung saw off Dhakshineswar Suresh in the other, and India finished day one 2-0 down with no margin left.
Saturday started better. N Sriram Balaji and Dhakshineswar Suresh won the doubles against Nam Ji-sung and Park Ui-sung, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, breaking twice in the opening set and once more in the eighth game of the decider. One hour and 44 minutes of work to keep the tie alive.
Then Nagal walked back out against Kwon and it was over almost before it started. Korea’s leader served heavily from the first game and punished the errors coming off the Indian baseline. Nagal found nothing in the second set either.
India drop back to the first round
Three times a Davis Cup finalist, in 1966, 1974 and 1987, India have still never reached the Final 8 under the current format. This was the closest they had come, and it produced one rubber. They now fall into the first round of the 2027 Qualifiers, which means starting the climb again in February.
Korea’s line-up carries genuine pedigree. Hyeon Chung reached the Australian Open semi-finals in 2018 before injuries removed years from his career, and he is still winning live rubbers in a tie of this size. Kwon, a former top-50 player on the ATP Tour, went through the weekend unbeaten.
