Three laps were enough
Sheldon Creed led the Food City 300 for exactly three laps. They were the last three. A late caution at Bristol Motor Speedway forced overtime, his crew fired him off pit road first on fresh tires, and he beat William Sawalich to the line by 0.253 seconds on Friday night.
“Honestly, my guys just put me in position there on new tires,” Creed said. “Pit crew did a great job, got me out first on tires. … Overtime just really put me in position there and I was able to execute a great restart and get clear.”
The win is his third NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series victory of the season and his second of the Chase.

His postseason reads first, second, first
Three playoff races have handed the Haas Factory Team driver two wins and a runner-up. He leaves Tennessee with an 11-point cushion over Justin Allgaier at the top of the standings, which is a healthier position than anyone expected from a driver who spent most of Friday running outside the top three.
Allgaier drove a wrecked car for most of the night. He won the opening stage and led 49 laps before contact at the end of that stage left him wrestling front bumper damage. He still dragged it home fourth.
“If you told me that we’d had a stage win, a second in the stage and a fourth-place finish with a car that’s as torn up as that one is, I’d have told you you’re crazy,” Allgaier said.
Kvapil leads 156 laps and collects nothing
Carson Kvapil ran the race everybody else was chasing. He led a race-high 156 laps and was still out front with 50 to go when mechanical trouble ended his night. Sawalich took second, Brent Crews third, Allgaier fourth and Corey Day fifth.
Weather shaped the weekend before anyone turned a competitive lap. Rain and lightning wiped out qualifying across the Bristol card, which handed Jesse Love the pole for the 300 without a timed run. The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Chase resumes on October 3 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
